How to Get to Greenwich Village
The subway stations
- West 4th Street–Washington Square (A, C, E, B, D, F, M): the hub, a short walk from the park.
- Christopher Street–Stonewall (1): renamed in 2024, for the Stonewall Inn and the West Village.
- 8th Street–NYU (R, W): the east side of the Village, towards Broadway.
- 14th Street stations on the 1/2/3, F/M, A/C/E and L lines, along the northern edge.

From Times Square
The Village lies about 2 miles (3 km) south, 35 to 45 minutes on foot straight down Seventh Avenue or Broadway. By subway, the 1 train from Times Sq–42nd Street to Christopher Street–Stonewall is five stops; the A, C or E from 42nd Street–Port Authority to West 4th Street is three. Either takes around 10 minutes plus the walk to the platform. The Times Square page has the short version.
From Penn Station and Grand Central
From Penn Station, the 1 train runs two stops to 14th Street or three to Christopher Street. From Grand Central, the 4, 5 or 6 goes to Union Square; from there it is a walk west along 14th Street or one stop on the L to 6th Avenue.
From the airports
From JFK, the AirTrain connects with the subway, and a subway ride into Manhattan ends at one of the stations above. From Newark, NJ Transit trains connect with PATH, which stops at Christopher Street and 9th Street inside the Village. Journey times depend on connections and are not given here.
On foot from the neighbours
SoHo begins across Houston Street, the southern edge; Washington Square to Houston is about 0.4 mile, 8 minutes. Chelsea and Union Square lie north of 14th Street. The history walk meets outside the Waverly Diner at Sixth Avenue and Waverly Place; the ghost walk at 385 Sixth Avenue; the food walk at Bagel Bob’s on University Place; the six-tastings walk outside the IFC Center, 323 Sixth Avenue, behind the West 4th Street exit at Sixth Avenue and Carmine Street. The music walk starts by the Keith Haring statue outside 101 Astor Place in the East Village, and the four-neighbourhood walk near Union Square, at a spot that depends on the language booked.
