The walk is advertised as free, and nobody pays to reserve a place. At the end the guide asks for a tip, and each walker decides the amount. The guide’s income comes from those tips. Group sizes, schedules and routes are set by each company and change from walk to walk; none of them sells through GetYourGuide, so none appears in the listings this site describes. Why this page exists
Search questions about Village walks ask for a free option again and again, and the straight answer is that the model exists and sits outside anything GetYourGuide lists. The self-guided alternative
The Village is public streets, so the route can be walked with no guide at all. A published self-guided route over the same ground runs about 1.5 miles (2.2 km) in 90 to 120 minutes. The self-guided walk on this site gives 14 stops in order, from the arch in Washington Square to the White Horse Tavern on Hudson Street, with the subway in and out. The catch is the street plan. The Village was already built when the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 laid numbered streets over Manhattan, so it kept its 18th-century pattern: West 4th Street runs north-south here and crosses West 10th, 11th and 12th Streets. What a booked walk fixes in advance
A GetYourGuide walk settles the things the tip model leaves open. The group cap is published on three of them: 10 on the history walk and the ghost walk, 6 on the music walk. The route is printed in the listing. The four-neighbourhood walk is guided in English, Spanish, Italian, French or German, booked by language; the other five are in English. Accessibility is stated too: the history walk and the food walk are wheelchair accessible, the six-tastings walk and the music walk are not, and the other two listings do not say. All six carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
